Whenever you see Marissa, it’s likely that she looks like she just stepped out of a black and white film. From high collared blouses to high waisted skirts, she loves vintage clothing. She’s loves pieces with traditionally feminine silhouettes like the pleated plaid skirt she made a week before flying to Paris.
Growing up in the small town of New Boston, New Hampshire, Marissa sought out thrifted clothing to stand out from her classmates who gravitated toward fast-fashion brands. Beyond her desire for original styles, she seeks fashion that is environmentally sustainable when possible.
Her style was heavily influenced by her mom early on, and she acquired several pieces from her mom’s wardrobe over the years. While her mom wore them in the 70s and 80s, she describes the clothing, including her favorite midi-length button down floral skirt, as timeless.
Thinking about style is ingrained in Marissa’s daily life. She is a theatre major, and she intends to pursue theatre costume design as a career. She’s especially attracted to making costumes for previous time periods or with fantastical elements. As such, she enjoys drawing influence from costumes she works on for school productions.
Ironically, she wants you to know that her look is not a costume. Marissa feels that her signature asymmetrical pixie cut—yet another thing she shares with her mother— creates a more authentic feel to her look. Rather than completing her old-fashioned ensembles with a historical hairdo, she incorporates elements of previous decades into a genuine representation of herself.
Working with costumes, Marissa is well aware of the fact that the way you dress dictates how people perceive you, and she carefully curates her style. While her clothing is often modest, as aligned with her introverted personality, Marissa’s fashionably classic appearance shows that there’s more to her than meets the eye.
